Anthony (Tony) Carfagnini   H.B.A., LL.B.

Anthony CarfagniniAnthony (Tony) attended University of Toronto and obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. At the University of Ottawa Law School he was a student editor of the Ottawa Law Review and graduated with a degree in Law (LL.B cum laude) in 1977 before moving to Thunder Bay.

Tony practices in various areas of property law including real estate, wills and estates and corporate commercial law. He is increasingly called upon to assist First Nations with natural resource development opportunities such as forestry, renewable energy projects, and agreements with respect to non renewable resources such as mining, on traditional territory.

He began providing corporate commercial legal advice to non-profit corporations and First Nations early in his career. Valuable practical experience in corporate governance and small business financing was obtained during his tenure as a Director of the Northern Ontario Development Corporation (NODC), an Ontario Crown agency established for the purpose of assisting small business with financing in Northern Ontario. From January 1995 to January 1996 he served as Chair of the NODC and worked on the Policy and Governance Committee with policy responsibility for all of the Ontario Development Corporations.

Tony pursued a personal interest in forest management by serving as a volunteer for several years on the local citizen’s committee for the Lakehead Forest Crown Management Unit.

Tony’s current interests include corporate governance and risk management for non-profit corporations and First Nations, training of volunteer directors, aboriginal economic development ventures, and the complex and increasingly important law of aboriginal consultation and accommodation.
